Call for Proposals: Children and Adolescence in a Changing Global Order

The Advanced Study Center of the University of Michigan invites proposals from faculty and graduate students to support research that focuses on childhood and/or adolescence. Childhood is a vital intellectual topic, the exploration of which can have practical manifestations that shape the world. We are particularly interested in projects that focus on how children and youth are represented and participate in public policy and cultural politics, and how transformations in nation-states and institutions involve children.

This call for proposals continues from the Advanced Study Center's 2001-2002 program, "Contested Childhood in a Changing Global Order" (http://www.umich.edu/~iinet/asc/contested-childhood.html). We invite research that has developed from that event, as well as new work on the subject.

The ASC will award 1-2 faculty awards of $5,000-$10,000, and 1-2 pre-dissertation grants of $3,000.

Eligibility: Applicants must either be UM faculty, including those in the regular instructional positions and primary research scientists, or UM graduate students at the candidate level. Funds may be requested to support collaborative seminars, workshops, research expenses, travel, student research assistant salaries, or related expenses. Funding will not be considered for faculty salaries.

Criteria: The following criteria will be used in assessing applications:

  • Central focus on childhood and/or adolescence in the work
  • Increases the growing body of theory on children and adolescence
  • Anticipated contribution of this project to research and knowledge about children and adolescence
  • Quality, significance and feasibility of the activity
  • Global aspect of the project
  • Ability to expand traditional disciplinary boundaries or engage multi-lateral institutions
  • Creativity or innovation of the project
Application: Applications should include the following information:
  • The International Institute Funding Cover Sheet available at www.umich.edu/~iinet/iisite/iigtr.html in PDF format or from jboyea@umich.edu
  • A 3-5 page description of the proposed project including the project objectives, proposed activities, and potential contributions
  • A 100 word abstract of the project
  • A budget and budget justification including other expected sources of support for the project
  • A short curriculum vitae for each participant, no more than two pages
If the project involves human or animal research, applicants must ensure that their research is approved by the relevant University Institutional Review Board.

Deadline: March 15, 2004. Three copies of the application should be submitted to Jeanne Boyea, Advanced Studies Center, International Institute, 1080 S. University, Suite 2660, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1106. Notification of awards will be made by April 15th, 2004.

Reporting of Award Activity: Awardees must submit a final report including a summary of the project objectives and accomplishments to the ASC by May 1, 2005.
