About the Committee for Children

The Committee's mission is to foster research, training, and dissemination of information to promote optimal health and development of children. The Committee's focus encompasses infants, children, and youth from before birth through the transition to adulthood in the context of family, school, community, culture, and the environment. The Committee's mission emphasizes commitment to diversity and to addressing social and health disparities that compromise children's well-being, especially among ethnic/racial minority populations.

Mission:

    A. Promote interdisciplinary research: The Committee fosters activities that nurture innovative interdisciplinary research related to children and childhood. These activities include establishing forums for the exchange and integration of ideas across the University and the community.

    B. Encourage innovative training: The Committee encourages the disciplinary and interdisciplinary training of scholars from the undergraduate through the postdoctoral levels in work related to children, youth, and families.

    C. Build new partnerships: The Committee helps forge new links within the University, among the universities in the region, and between researchers and the community.

    D. Facilitate communication relevant to policy: The Committee facilitates communications and exchange with public and private policy makers, advocates and practitioners. The Committee emphasizes implications for established as well as emerging research and ways to translate findings to policy and practice.

    E. Disseminate information: The committee strives to assemble, coordinate and disseminate information concerning activities at the University of Michigan related to children and research on children including colloquia, symposia, courses and other relevant endeavors and our community partners. Our long-term goal is to facilitate communication among universities in the region and community partners.
